Debt haunts many of us but there are many many positive role models in the community showing us that it needed drag us down. When the world seems like it’s out to get us we need to look at people like this with respect and use them as a point of inspiration.

Samuel ‘Ciryl’ O’Banner took to his facebook (on.fb.me/1YSedjn) to share the amazing news that he and his wife had paid off over $50k worth of debt in just 1.5 years of marriage. Here is what he wrote:

WE’RE DEBT FREE!!! Today, after just a year and a half of marriage my wife and I have aggressively paid off $50,531.83 in debt! Normal in our society is having car loans, credit cards, student loan debt, etc… We didn’t want to be normal. Proverbs 22:7 declares that the borrower is slave to the lender. We didn’t want to be slaves to anyone but Christ!

The journey wasn’t easy. We were paying off thousands of dollars a month as newlyweds. What allowed us to stay focused was the fact that we continued to imagine a life where we didn’t owe anyone. A life where we could have fun with money, save for our future, and give generously. We lived on a very strict budget but it was rewarding to see the progress each month.

Debt freedom while I was single was cool but the opportunity to usher my wife through this process in marriage is a greater joy! The moment we exchanged vows I instantly embraced my wife’s debt as OUR debt. I have to give a special thank you to my wife who trusted my leadership the entire way. We will continue to share the principles that have helped us accomplish this goal in hopes of encouraging others to ‘break the norm’!
