“Birth Of A Nation” Star Aunjanue Ellis Sets Black Feminist Straight About the Importance of Nate Turner’s Story

And the saga continues with the Birth of Nation rhetoric, Aunjanue Ellis (she plays Nat Turner’s mother) goes in on the co-founder of BLACK, Amber Phillips, a black feminist group for her organization’s focus on Nat Parker’s rape allegation. As opposed to the importance of Nat Turner’s story and the positive effect it could have on the African American community.

Life is about forgiveness and to protest a movie that is so profound for the black community, is selfish. Although our victories and triumphs are a part of American history they are never told. The history children learn in school is that which comes from a white American narrative which we are constantly learning is also a false narrative. Nat Turner’s story is an amazing part of our history that ever man, woman and child should learn. It’s so much bigger than Nate Parker. I’m sure these black feminists clearly see the negative effect that robbing us of our religion and history has taken on our people.

The healing starts with knowing the strength, intelligence and courage your ancestors possessed.

And only then will we begin to understand who we are. If we leave it to the history books our children will continue to believe their ancestors were ignorant, barbaric slaves undeserving of fair and humane treatment.

Ellis was trying to explain to Phillips that she is a small part of the lucky few who know Nat Turner’s story. There are so many of us out here who never even heard of Nat Turner and it is important for us to know his story just as we know Martin Luther King Jr.

’s story. Our history is rich with ancestors who fought for our freedom, there was more than just Harriet Tubman. This story is a must see, so let’s leave Nate Parker’s past in the past and focus on the importance of this movie.
