The Cincinnati Bengals won a new fan this week with their humanitarian actions over typical NFL business.
The Ohio based team trimmed down their 53 man roster like all teams did this week. Nothing new, this was business as usual. So when former second round draft pick Devon Still didn’t make the cut, no one was surprised. Still just didn’t have it this preseason. He played like he was pre-occupied with something else.
Turns out that something else was his four year old daughter, Leah. She was recently diagnosed with stage 4 pediatric cancer back in June. Still had a lot more important things on his mind than playing defense in the NFL. He was carrying the weight of his daughter on his mind.
The Bengals did what every NFL team does when a player doesn’t perform up to par or is outplayed by other people on the roster. They cut him.
“I completely understand where the Bengals were coming from when they cut me because I couldn’t give football 100 percent right now,” Still told ABC News.
But Still’s story didn’t end there. The Bengals decided to re-sign Still to the practice squad.
And although he won’t make the potential millions he could earn as a member of the 53 man roster, the ,300 weekly salary and medical insurance for his family and Leah will go a long, long way.
Obviously, Still is grateful and relieved the Bengals decided to keep him on the 10 man practice squad instead of cutting him all together.
“They could have washed their hands with me and said they didn’t care about what I was going through off the field,” Still said. “It’s like a blessing in disguise for me.”
Still will practice during the week with the team, but not travel during the weekend or play in the games. But that is alright, he has the means to get his daughter the best help she can get and that is good enough for now.
We wish the Still family and Leah the best of luck. You are in our prayers!
