In recent weeks the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has deported over 200 Haitian nationals according to Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson.
The sudden deportation is apparently part of announced “plans to significantly expand removal operations in the coming weeks”.
Newly arrived Haitian nationals will be detained and deported, this has been in place since September 21st.
Previous to this “humanitarian parole” allowed Haitians in to the country but this special circumstance has been ended. The initial stop to deportations were stopped after 220,000 were killed and the country’s infrastructure was severely damaged in the 2010 Earthquake.
This action feels terrible considering the current plight of Haiti and the conditions people are living in back home after stacked disasters. I know it’s hard to argue that USA should or could look after everyone who washes up on their shores but surely there is something better that can be done for these people.
Do you think this is justified?
