“None of that ‘hero’ stuff…”
One teacher who was murdered in the Broward County, Florida, white supremacist terrorism melee that left 17 students, teachers and staff members dead had told his wife that if he ever died in a school shooting, to skip the “hero stuff” and tell the truth [paraphrased]: That he was really a low-down dirty scoundrel. She said “I’ve done as he asked me to. And still, he was the most wonderful man I ever met.” Or words to that effect.
Among the heroes to emerge from the Florida school shooting horror is 15-year-old Anthony Borges, shot five times while saving the lives of 20 of his fellow students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, Parkland.
Maybe Anthony Borges wasn’t trying to be a hero, either, but it’s more than obvious that his own life was the last thing on his mind. He made his way to being a human shield to protect many of the survivors.
STATEMENT from the Broward County Sheriff’s Department:
“The Sheriff was honored to visit Anthony Borges, 15, in the hospital. Anthony was shot five times. Fortunately, he is recovering, but has a long road ahead with more surgeries needed. Please join us in praying for the swift recovery of Anthony and all others from #StonemanDouglas,” the office wrote in a tweet along with a touching photo of the sheriff’s visit.
Broward County should take a moment of silence to pray for and act on the ending of automatic weapons within city limits and near schools. Praying for the recovery of survivors and for murder victims, many of them on the day of the funerals, is too little far too late.
Borges’ friend, Carlos Rodriguez, told ABC News “None of us knew what to do. So he took the initiative to just save his other classmates.”
Rodriguez said that Borges ran into a room with his classmates, then blocked the door in an attempt to lock it, but before he got it shut, he was hit. Last news reports stated that his condition was upgraded from critical to “fair.”
It doesn’t mean he’s out of danger, but for all intents and purposes, it now appears Borges will survive the terrorist attack by Nikolas Cruz. He will likely eventually recover, but at what price -at what final cost- will white America finally fall out of its fetish love for weapons of mass destruction? What is the ultimate price to make these killers crawl on their knees in REAL prayer to repent of their manifold sins and penchant for lustful wanton violence? Not just in America, but worldwide.
On the GoFundMe page created by Borges’ family member, Royer, it reads “He has a long road of recovery ahead of him but he is alive and stable. Our thoughts and prayers are with Anthony and his family. Any help is very much appreciated.”
As of this writing, the GoFundMe account has raised nearly half a million of the $700,000 goal.
Domestic terrorist Nikolas Cruz, the ‘suspected’ gunman, is said to be in the process of pleading guilty in the murders of 14 of Anthony’s classmates and three #StonemanDouglas staff members.
As the Parkland victims continue to be buried by their families, I have to take a ‘moment of silence’ in behalf of all of the Black victims of massive domestic terrorism and violence within and outside of the Black community.
I have seen one too many Black families end up with “GoFundMe” pages to bury their loved ones; yet, Borges, Anthony, was one of the blessed ones.
“Thoughts and prayers” need to be sent out to condemn the makers and manufacturers of these automatic weapons, as well as for the destruction of those who market, sell and profit from them.
The proliferation of guns and automatic weaponry into the Black communities is ghastly egregious, and this is the place in America where far more than 17 lives are lost almost daily-not once or twice or even three times a year, and not just to black-on-black violence.
Black American Heroism
Be a REAL hero for Anthony Borges and his classmates and for all of the others.
Lift him up even as mainstream media sheds more light on the avoidance of calling Nikolas Cruz a terrorist than on the people he murdered and terrorized. Speak life to the children and death to the gunmakers, manufacturers, and their facilities.
After all, Borges doesn’t just have physical healing in his future, he will also have a long way to go in his mind and in his spirit and soul.
The massive artillery in the destruction of human lives, of the lives of children and families, is no time to send more empowerment prayers and good vibes to those who do the destroying. The great Black American magic of throwing our Black bodies and psychological protection endorsements in front of the “stephenish” NRA and the Jim Crow Second Amendment needs to end. Yesterday.
We Shall Overcome
Black America, you had the power to end this and file American mainstream gun violence amongst all races in the “We Did Overcome” column, a long time ago.
Get it done.
