Samuel J. Jackson drew some side eyes last week when he appeared to try and create a rift between Black British and Black American actors by complaining that Black Brits often snag roles playing Black Americans. He had said that he wonders what “Get Out” would have been like “with an American brother who really feels that.”.
However, he has tried to explain himself a little now and has said he wasn’t trying to slam actors, who have been cast as Americans in everything from Selma, to Get Out, to The Wire, Star Wars and beyond!
It seems Hollywood do have a soft spot for Brits playing Americans and this goes for black actors too!
Talking the the AP last Wednesday Jackson said:
“It was not a slam against them, but it was just a comment about how Hollywood works in an interesting sort of way sometimes,”
And that it was a one-way street.
“We’re not afforded that same luxury, but that’s fine, we have plenty of opportunities to work,”
“I enjoy their work,”
“I enjoy working with them when I have the opportunity to do that.”
Well…. Samuel, work on that British accent, cut your fee by 20 times and then you’d be cast in a moments notice in any British movie!
