I honestly had no idea that Yasin Bey, AKA Mos Def has been trapped in South Africa for 11 months after he attempted to leave the country on the wrong passport! Apparently he has now been allowed to leave after he apologized but he has been slapped with the status of “Undesirable Person” by the government.
It sounds a bit mad, so let’s explain a little further!
Bey has been living there since 2013 but when he tried to leave in January he was stopped. Along with his labelling officials also say he and some family members have overstayed visas.
Bey tried to leave the country using a World Passport. The passport made by the World Government of World Citizens say that “the very acceptance of a national passport is the mark of the slave, serf or subject”.
It’s claimed the passport has been accepted for over 60 years in over 160 countries on a case-by-case basis.
Bey was arrested when he tried to use his and has been trapped in the country until he recently apologized and South Africa’s Home Affairs department accepted. They said in a statement
“based on his apology, and the confirmation that he will depart… using a valid passport, the department will withdraw the charges against him”.
As he is now labelled undesirable it means he cannot renter at port-of-entry and will have to apply for waivers, which of course can be denied!
DHA has accepted the apology of #MosDef & has agreed in principle for him to depart from SA on 22 Nov 16 pic.twitter.com/PVILVh594k
