African-American people just don’t take the the trails, lakes, rivers, mountains like whites do, it’s a fact and really there is no fair reason for it. The USA has an amazing amount of opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors in many forms. There really is something for everyone.
Obviously it wasn’t always this way.
The disconnect with the outdoors is a modern affliction. Outdoor Afro is on a mission to reconnect African-American people with nature and the great outdoors!
In 2009 Rue Mapp shared her idea for a blog called Outdoor Afro, she felt like she finally found a purpose and a focus.
And that she has!
The blog has grown way beyond articles on a page. Outdoor Afro groups now run in 30 states with local chapters led by volunteer Outdoor Afro leaders.
They organise countless activities from hiking to canoeing, rock climbing, farm tours and camping, and much much more.
The groups literally attract African-Americans from ALL walks of life and create strong communities with a common interest.
Rye grew up in the outdoors. She grew up in Oakland and her family had a ranch 100miles north of the city, as a young girl she went hunting, fishing and was also a Girl Scout.
Now Rue’s love is spreading and getting people inquisitive and active.
And that’s where you come in!
Really there is no reason why you should not at very least try and find your local chapter and see if you enjoy the activities.
AND…. if there is not a chapter, then that’s where you could possibly start one.
