We Have THIS Woman To Thank For Showing The World The Beauty Of Black Dance

Black dance styles are evident in every single modern dance style. Even those considered classic (such as ballet) have implemented modern black influenced styles in subtle ways and obvious, such as Hiplet (HipHop-Ballet). Black dance styles that originated in Africa and were continued by the African Diaspora.

In the 1920s, Katherine Dunham was studying sociology in Chicago. She fell in love with dance, she danced ballet but wanted to learn more about her roots and travelled to the Caribbean to learn more and develop her own style.

She travelled to many countries with her dance company and changed the world of dance forever.
