A pig in an officer uniform, gun drawn, pointed directly at a black wolf, possibly throwing a black power fist towards the officer, a christ-like brown man hanging in the foreground, weighing liberty, a black man being led away! This piece of work was about the violent clashes between police and protesters in Ferguson and other incidents like it! It really says it all! It’s a wondrous piece. This is the work of a young black man who was just 18-years-old, reflecting on the trouble in Ferguson. This is the work of Missouri student David Pulphus.
So, how did this painting come to hang in the halls of Congress?
Well, David won a competition, he won Missouri’s 1st Congressional District as part of the United States Congressional Art Competition at the end of April. And as that winner he had to have his art go up in those hallways!
This art caused offence and problems!
Buzzfeed (src) reported that it hung in the halls for seven months and then…
Some police organizations took issue with this depiction and asked, in a strongly worded letter to House Speaker Paul Ryan, that the painting be taken down. Shortly after, Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-California) took it down himself. Then Rep. Lacy Clay (D-Missouri) put it back up. A few hours later, two other Republican representatives — Dana Rohrabacher and Brian Babin — took it down again.
The art made people speak, it worked it’s magic and as an everyday person I applaud his work, it says what is on a lot of our minds! It’s perfect in every sense and it should get people talking…. Screw those who wanted it down, we have to face this reality!
The art is below, let us know what you think of it?
