I’m sure Ben Hur is going to please some people, it’s going to be thrilling in many ways. And guess what, the man Morgan Freeman is wearing matted dreads as a main role in the re-make. But is this going to be enough?
Although a fictional story, Ben Hur is mixed in with real life events, involving the Roman Empire, the time of Jesus and the Middle East.
Yet, time on time, Hollywood misrepresents with upper class English accents and white leads! Where are the Italians, the Arabs, the mixed accents and the diversity that the empire and the time likely had in these stories…. As usual they don’t sell.
But you watch the trailer for the new Ben Hur and a matted dreadlocked Morgan Freeman (still carrying his standard American accent) is prominent. The look is interesting and a glimpse at attempting to diversify but it’s just no where near enough.
The movie is probably going to be cool but difficult not to watch without a critical lens and a sour taste.
