So when Portland Community College’s planned “Whiteness History Month” got spread around the internet a certain amount of buzz, reaction and wtf!
was thrown around.
Of course White History Month (in the same way as Black History Month) is not needed and those that support such an idea are not really fighting for the same causes we are here at UI! Yes, that’s an understatement!!!
So “Whiteness History Month” certainly raises eyebrows but it may not be what you immediately think and maybe it’s not such a bad thing, it may even be positive.
Spokespeople for the event dubbed “Whiteness History Month: Context, Consequences, and Change” are still taking presentation proposals and were caught a little off guard by the buzz.
The event was said “The intent was to look at whiteness as a social construct,” which basically means looking at the history that has led to things like white priviledge and examining how it can be dealt with to better serve people as a whole.
Now of course it’s still somewhat controversial and could be looked at as a middle class “white” attempt to address the issue. Also the name choice is dangerous but maybe they wanted to create the buzz?
What do you think?
