An African American Broadway actor, Elijah Ahmad Lewis, was racially assaulted by a white woman who repeatedly hurled racial insults at him. Elijah is a member in Motown the Musical and lives in New York. He was in Reno to do the show when the altercation happened. He said that the woman started to yell at him, charged at him and hit him in his neck.

A video that he posted on Facebook clearly illustrates what transpired after he pulls out his phone as the woman was walking away shouting the n-word. The woman continues insulting Lewis as he follows her for about a minute. Later she turns and walks towards him as she says the racial slur repeatedly.

Lewis stated that he was not seriously injured but says that she started hitting him again.

Reno Police detective Lieutenant Zach Thew said the woman from a video has been identified and provided a statement to police. He said they received numerous calls from the community identifying the woman, but will not confirm her identity nor release her statement while they are investigating.

The police forwarded evidence to the Reno City Attorney’s Office for review and will continue to investigate the incident. Reno police are asking for any witnesses to come forward to provide additional information.
