Video: Savannah Prosecutors Quietly Dropped Charges Against White Fire Captain who Threatened a Black Couple with a Gun

In many ways it seems as though this country is working hard to show us that Black Lives truly do not matter to white Americans. No one should ever be able to shout racial slurs at another human being, threaten to kill them and walk away like nothing ever happened.

In October of 2015 while dining at Applebee’s, Marquist Curtis and his fiancée, Amber Phillips were faced with this life threatening situation. While dining at an Applebee’s in Savannah, Georgia, firefighter captain Barry Arnold shouted racial slurs at his black waitress, then turned his verbal attack onto the Curtis’. As they tried to leave Arnold tripped Mr. Curtis and found his way to the parking lot where they were. This is where he pulled out his gun, flashed his badge and threatened to kill them because as he told them, he would get away with it.

And that’s the short version of the story. These disgusting actions were not enough for him to be charged with anything. The Curtis’ and their attorney Will Claiborne decided to follow up on the initial charges for updates, only to find out that the charges had been dropped.

“You’ve got a captain in the fire department who pulls a gun on these people and says, ‘With this badge and this gun, I get to kill people and get away with it,’” Claiborne said. “The police at the scene stop him while he’s trying to drive away.”

According to Claiborne, Arnold should have been charged with driving under the influence, aggravated assault and terrorist threats. He and the Curtis’ believe Arnold’s race and city position are playing a huge role in the lack of official action.

“We want to raise public awareness that this sort of injustice happens in 2016,” Claiborne said. “What would happen to anybody else other than a white captain in the fire department is just shocking.”

He pointed out that if Mr. Curtis had pulled a gun on Arnold or anyone else for that matter, “he’d still be sitting in jail.” The city prosecutor Meg Heap said the misdemeanor charges were dropped and they are “considering” filing felony charges in a higher court.

Although Arnold did lose his job following this incident, charges must be filed.
