A UN working group has recently recommended that the United States should consider reparations to its citizens of African American descent who trace their roots to slavery. Well, by the definition of reparation, this sure is a great recommendation. Reparation simply means to repair; to make up for a wrong that has been done.In essence the action is in the pure interest of fairness.
Obviously, reparations is something that has been promised to the African Americans for centuries, but never delivered. In fact, the United States has taken measure and measure to turn back the progress of African Americans over the centuries.
However, in the case at hand, it is a very delicate issue that goes beyond the surface appearance of kissing and making up. It is a situation that could lead to even further damage and erosion of the progress that has already been made, if you can call it that.
For one, for reparation to start, there has to be a detailed admission from one side that wrongs were done, which still hasn’t been done and seems like they are fighting against it at every turn. Citizens of African American descent have long pushed for this, and that is a good thing.
Nevertheless, great care should be taken to avoid dividing the country down in the middle pitting those who demand repair on one side and those being called to take a certain action on the other, but reality says there are going to be some racist individuals that are not going to want to take responsibility for what their forefathers did to an entire race of people for their personal benefit.
This would lead to each side sitting on a different side of the negotiation table, therefore backtracking on the developments that have been made by years and years of fighting for co-existence without discrimination. It would once again boil down to race and , edging out those whose stand is based on none of these factors.
It is about time the United Nations took up this fight for African Americans. Every other people that have been wronged in the stealing of this world by the superpowers have been properly compensated accept African Americans.
The bill is due. It is time to pay the piper!
