UK Prime Minister Says “Move On” To Calls For Slavery Reparations

The UK Prime Minsister David Cameron has caused some controversy on a trade trip to Jamaica when he initially brushed off calls for talk of slavery reparations but later addressed the Kingston parliament with calls to move on!

The UK’s role in slavery and collonialism in the Caribbean islands arguably still affects today and has caused some mess in which many believe the UK have a role in fixing.

So when Cameron arrived he was asked to talk on apology but said he was only there for trade talks. However here is what he said when he addressed the Kingston Parliament

“While there is indeed much to celebrate about our past, it would be wrong to do so while ignoring the most painful aspects of it – a period which should never be forgotten, and from which history has drawn the bitterest of lessons,” Cameron said.

“Slavery was and is abhorrent in all its forms. It has no place whatsoever in any civilised society, and Britain is proud to have eventually led the way in its abolition.

“That the Caribbean has emerged from the long shadow it cast is testament to the resilience and spirit of its people. I acknowledge that these wounds run very deep indeed. But I do hope that, as friends who have gone through so much together since those darkest of times, we can move on from this painful legacy and continue to build for the future.”

Of course this caused head shakes.

Previously in an open letter to the PM Sir Hilary Beckles had written

“We ask not for handouts or any such acts of indecent submission. We merely ask that you acknowledge responsibility for your share of this situation and move to contribute in a joint programme of rehabilitation and renewal,”

Do you think the PMs remarks are a disgrace?
