UI Daily #2: Turning Ferguson’s Short Term Rage Into Long Term Prosperity

by | Aug 16, 2014 | Blog | 0 comments

The second show of UI Daily has landed.

There is a lot of tension and energy surrounding the killing of Michael Brown in Ferguson, MO, but there hasn’t been much conversation about what are we going to do about it. The UI Daily team takes on this challenge to find solutions to our problem moving forward and not just harping on what is wrong in and around the community.

Early in the show, you will find the panel members saying we need to move away from marching and protesting because it isn’t doing what we need to be done. We need to expand our tactics to get the desired level of long term change we desire in our communities.

Many believe this is why many people were walking out on Al Sharpton and the NAACP because they seem to come to talk about the same tired, useless tactics of marching and singing. WELL, we want and need more!

Here are some of the solutions that came out this UI Daily discussion.

  1. If you are the majority in your city, then you MUST VOTE and control your politics. NO EXCUSE, you have the numbers.
  2. Must vet your candidates to ensure they are invested in our communities and from the struggle.
  3. You got to be involved in the politics, get to know your local officials…if you can’t see their face, get them out. (Politics are local.)
  4. Control the framing of the discussion. Stop majoring in the minor…the major issue is blacks are not treated as human and no institutions to (period) to protect them.
  5. Building black institutions in the community
  6. Black community economics must be practiced.
  7. Strategic economic boycotts of corporations and municipalities. Stop funding useless entertainers who don’t support the black community.
