Former U.S President Bill Clinton admitted to contributing to the problem of mass incarceration following a law he signed in 1994 as president. The law, Violent Crime and Law Enforcement Act more famously known as the Crime Bill, saw a sharp increase in convictions and longer serving of prison sentences by prisoners including those nabbed for non-violent crimes.
This is more than likely due to the fact that this bill offered states billions in funding for new prisons. This bill also paved way for the adoption of ‘Three Strikes’ which included reducing prisoners’ chance for parole and a mandatory life- sentence serving for criminals convicted of two or more violent felonies among other correctional measures.
The admission occurred a day after President Obama criticized mass incarceration in an address made at the NAACP convention where he also outlined a plan for reform. The former President was quoted saying, “…I signed a bill that made the problem worse and I want to admit it.
” Clinton’s sentiments were received with mixed reactions but he however admitted that America enjoyed the biggest drop in crime rates only to be overshadowed by the high number of people locked up and for too long for minor offenses.
Just keep this in mind when you’re listening to these politicians. Ruining people’s lives for minor offenses so they can make some extra money and then saying I was wrong, sorry everybody.
Check these politician’s track record before you vote to make sure they don’t change their opinion as often as they change their socks.
