After allegations of a stolen backpack in 2010, 16-year-old Kalief Browder’s life was destroyed. He ended up spending years in prison for a crime he was never convicted of! Kalief told of his two years of solitary confinement, starvation and other terrible treatment.
After his release in 2013 he was a broken man. Eventually he ended up taking his own life.
Hs story is beyond heartbreaking and one of those people heavily affected was Jay Z.
Jay Z met with Kalief when he was released from prison to give words of encouragement. When he heard of his death he was devastated.
jay Z decided he wanted to do something to bring the story to light and he brought Browder’s experience to producer and studio executive Harvey Weinstein.
At a press conference on Thursday he said “Kalief’s [story] is a kind of story you can’t ignore,”, and introduced the six-part documentary “TIME: The Kalief Browder Story,” that will be debuting on Spike in January 2017.
