Suspended From School Because She Did Not Have An Afro, Dreads, or Locs?

There have been many cases reported over the past year of students being suspended from school or forced to change their hair style because it was natural. These students had Afros, dreads, locs, or some other hair style that wasn’t considered of the Western culture of assimilation.

But what if students were being kicked out of school or parents fined because their hair were not natural? Meaning, if they didn’t have an Afro, dreads, or locs, then they would be in violation?

afroBefore you lose your mind over the title of this article, this isn’t true, but we think it poses a great question to this country. What if there were schools doing what many around the country are doing, but only in reverse? What if you and your student spent hundreds of dollars on weave, relaxer or some other hair style and the school sent your child home or you were fined?

You would probably outraged, right?

This question came about because we were on The Children of Nat Turner’s Facebook page and they had this post.

OUR BROTHER UMAR JOHNSON IS TAKING NO SHORTS WITH WHAT IS REQUIRED IN THE SCHOOL!!

“Unnatural hair will not be accepted on the FDMG campus. All Queens in training (K-12) must adhere to this rule. First infractions will result in a $500 fine to the parent or legal guardian. Your child will be expelled from school upon their second infraction. Unnatural hair includes perm, wig, weave, european hair colors, extensions, sew-ins, straightening comb, etc……” (Excerpt from 2016 Anna Douglass & Amy Garvey RBG Leadership Academy Parent & Princess Handbook)

UI is unsure if this is an actual rule in the school. And let me be clear, we have no reason to believe it is fake. Just wanted to be straight up with you here.

However, let’s consider it was real and this is the stance of the school. Do you think it is fair? Should this be allowed? Or is this a private school, therefore, their rules are their rules?
