When 106-year-old Virginia McLaurin walked into the White House it seemed to take everyone off guard. Her wish to meet President Obama and his wife was fulfilled and she showed an absolutely strong heart as she danced, showed her disbelief at actually seeing a black man in the White House and just generally stole everyone’s hearts.
Her 15 seconds of fame said a lot about her so it really is no suprise to learn just how involved and important she is to her local community.
McLaurin’s friend and neighbor Deborah Menkart spoke to ABC News and said that McLaurin
“wants to maintain her independence and be close to her church,”
“In order for her to stay close to her church and have a place that’s accessible to a person of her age, she needs to raise funds. We’ve been getting an outpouring from people that said they want to help.”
Menkart spoke of McLaurin’s comunity involvement saying that she is an advocate with the tenants’ rights organization the Latino Economic Development Center and also dedicates up to 40 hours per week at an early childhood classroom as a foster grandmother.
This is simply amazing and it’s no wonder she is so sprite at her tender old age.
Menkart managed to arrange the meeting with Obama, Virginia’s only request, and also reached out for support.
They are looking to raise $50k for her and have set up a “Support for Ms. Virginia McLaurin” on YouCaring.com.
At the time of writing the campaign has reached over $11k but has some way to go, you can help a little here: https://www.youcaring.com/virginia-mclaurin-529283/donate#wp
