It’s been over a week since actor/activist Jesse Williams used his moment of recognition at the BET Awards to make a bold and empowering speech that called out racism, police brutality, and cultural appropriation.
Needless to say, some folks are still in their feelings about it.
A petition has been created on Change.org calling for Jesse Williams to be fired from his role on the hit TV show Grey’s Anatomy, claiming that Williams “spewed racist hate speech” against law enforcement and White people.
The petition makes the same tired, lame argument that if Williams were a White man speaking about African Americans, there would be consequences for his actions, but apparently the lack of response creates a double standard.
The petition reads as follows:
“Jesse Williams spewed a racist, hate speech against law enforcement and white people at the BET awards. If this was a white person making the same speech about an African American, they would have been fired and globally chastised, as they should be, but there has been no consequences to Williams’ actions. There’s been no companies making a stand against his racist remarks and no swift action condemning his negative attitude. Why was Burke’s character fired from Grey’s Anatomy after his inappropriate homophobic slur, but nothing for Jesse Williams? Why the one-way street? Why the support for a hater? Why the hypocrisy? #AllLivesMatter All humans bleed the same color. #EqualConsequences4RacistBehavior”
The petition was created four days ago, and as of this writing it has 842 supporters. If it reaches 1,000, it will be submitted to ABC for consideration.
It is sad, but not surprising, that in this era where the most blatantly racist candidate for President in modern history has an actual shot at the White House, the act of speaking out against institutionalized racism and the exploitation of Black culture can be considered racist, but the bullying, harassment and assault of Black people at a political rally is protected as “free speech”.
So far there’s been no response from Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes or the representatives of ABC, but if they’re smart, they’ll realize that the millions of shares and re-tweets of Jesse’s speech were probably done by people who watch the show, so they might want to keep Jesse right where he is.
