A smiling black man open ring box in hand, sits across from an almost tearful white woman, in shock, hands over her mouth, moments from crying tears of joy.
The caption reads
Who said yes??Cheers to the newly engaged this holiday season! Be sure to #ProtectTheBling!
That was the way State Farm decided to promote their insurance recently on Twitter, via an ad using a stock photo of a happy couple just getting engaged. The couple happened to be bi-racial. The advert was interpreted by many to mean the ring needs to be protected because State Farm was insinuating the relationship would not last….
Here is the original ad, and below are some of the responses.

Have you noticed that interracial couples in ads are usually black man + white woman but never white man + black woman?#ProtectTheBling

However, some praised the ad!
Hey @StateFarm, my interracial family thanks you for being willing to showcase diverse love! #LoveWins and yes, #ProtectTheBling too ? pic.twitter.com/N1TnUwwfBg
