The long time hip hop star Snoop has never been one to bite his tongue on social, political or community issues. He has always spoken the truth as he sees it and this week was no different.

The rapper/actor from Long Beach, CA hit the world between the eyes with a Tweet about Akon’s Lighting Africa solar initiative and Caitlyn, formerly Bruce, Jenner. Many may not be familiar with the impressive work Akon is doing in Africa with his initiative, but are well aware of Jenner’s decision to change his gender. This is the problem Snoop has with the world, the media and society.

Akon was boarn in St. Louis, Missouri, but spent most of his childhood in Senegal and refers to that it has his “hometown”. He has many roots for the country and love for the African continent, which is why he puts so much effort into elevating the people.

Akon’s Lighting Africa project will bring solar powered electricity to 600 million Africans that don’t have it currently, which is amazing to say the least, but not the end of his endeavor. He recently announced a “Solar Academy” that will assist the initiative in a very powerful way. The academy will educate, teach and train Africans how to build, operate, repair and maintain the solar powered grid so they are able to maintain it in the future. This will create jobs and opportunity for a people that need it and will last them long into the 21st century.

Many in the black community think this is a tremendous initiative and Akon should be applauded around the world, but it doesn’t seem to be receiving much news. People are frustrated because distracting announcements like Caitlyn Jenner are taking away from this shine.

Snoop had enough and took to twitter to release his frustrations and disagreements with the people and media constantly talking about Jenner, but sweeping Akon’s efforts under the table. He lashed out calling Jenner a science project and posting a picture of Akon.

Snoop’s Tweet: “Should out to Akon! He is about to supply 600 million Africans with solar power. I’m really upset that this isn’t major news but that science project Bruce Jenner is. #Society”

I’m a bit upset with myself for writing about Jenner. I said I wouldn’t, but felt this point had to be made in the piece on Snoop. Nevertheless, it is in relation to a project that I have the highest level of respect for and that’s Akon’s Lighting Africa Initiative, but would love to hear your thoughts.
