Deanna and Mya Scott should not receive a detention every day until they take their extensions out. But the school is well within their rights asking the young ladies not to wear extensions again once they have taken them out.
The school dress code policy clearly states that extensions are not permitted in school. The sister’s school, Mystic Valley Regional Charter School, released a statement addressing the controversy:
“The specific prohibition of hair extensions, which are expensive and could serve as a differentiating factor between students from dissimilar socioeconomic backgrounds, is consistent with our desire to create an educational environment, one that celebrates all that students have in common and minimizes material differences and distractions.”
My only issue is with how the school handled the situation. You address the parents not the students. The young ladies’ parents should have been contacted immediately and school officials should have reviewed the policy with the parents and given that same statement to them personally. We live in a time where our ability to effectively communicate with each other is terrible.
Initial statements claimed the school said the girls couldn’t wear braids which I do believe is culturally insensitive but extensions are a different story. I don’t view this policy any differently than school uniform which is implement for the same reason. We live in a very materialist society, people care more about the price of your shoes than they care about you as a person.
I’m sure many will disagree but I’m currently dealing with a similar situation. Parents at my child’s school have signed contracts agreeing to certain policies and when the policies are administered the parents want to come in and change things. My husband and I are paying for our kids to attend a school that gives us the academic results we are looking, if the school has a no extension policy I’m fine with that I will save my battles for other things.
So I think it all boils down to communication and how the girls were treated. Suspension and being kicked off of sports is ridiculous.
