Black men empowering Black Men is a beautiful thing, in my opinion. It’s one of the many things our community could use more of these days. Thanks to Darius Bland and his Bland Brandon, LLC efforts, we have an opportunity to share a wonderful story with you.
Seven years ago, Bland became a single father and didn’t know a thing about doing his daughter’s natural hair. Like any loving father, he bellied up to the opportunity, tried and over the years have learned a few things.
Well now, he is passing along his lessons to other fathers in the Huntsville, AL area with a series of workshops entitled “Can Daddy Do My Hair?”
May 21st, 2017 was the first of these workshops. It allowed 12 dads to attended the tutorial session with their daughters ranging in age from 3 to 10 years old. Bland coached the fathers and gave them tips for doing their daughters’ natural hair while preaching the importance of this bonding opportunities.
“These dads are learning a lot; not only about hair but what many moms go through,” he told WHNT. “They didn’t understand the frustration that mothers have to go through while doing their daughters’ hair.” – From the Huffington Post
Bland admits he isn’t perfect when doing his daughters hair, but he is trying and wants to ensure his daughter looks as good as she can with her natural hair. And he wants to help other fathers do the same while giving back to his community.
It’s refreshing to hear him putting an emphasis on natural hair in this video. Many times the mainstream media likes to demonize the natural hair of Black women in this country. However, Bland is reinforcing its beauty be to make sure his daughter and many others know they were born with perfect hair, just the way it is.
One love to Darius Bland and the work he is doing building strong relationships between fathers and daughters.
