Sergeant Sues Police Department Over a Black Cop Depicted As A Monkey In Training Video

by | Jan 23, 2015 | News | 1 comment

Images of black people depicted as monkeys is flat offensive. Just about anyone will tell you that in 2015. Anyone except those working inside the San Diego Police Department’s training division.

Sergeant Arthur Scott is a 10 year veteran of the San Diego Police Department, but he is suing because he believes a cartoon used during a training event was “racist”. The cartoon displays an African-American police officer as a “monkey”. Scott took offense.

According to KGTV, Scott made his displeasure known to the department. However, instead of dealing with his concerns, he “was transferred to a different division” and basically told to keep quiet.

Scott’s attorney, Dan Gilleon, expressed how flabbergasted he is that the San Diego Police Department would continue to show such a video.

“This is so over-the-top racist,” Gilleon told KGTV.

“This is so over-the-top racist,” Gilleon told KGTV.

San Diego’s local NAACP chapter weighed in and supports Scott’s understanding that the cartoon is insensitive and that the department should have known better than to continue to play the cartoon during training events.

“If it’s OK to do that for training officers, we can’t possibly be moving forward,” Andre Branch, president of the San Diego chapter of the NAACP, said.

This doesn’t look good for the San Diego Police Department. It is one thing to offend black people, which we know can be done in this country, but the video also is “racist” towards the Asian community as well. This may not be the only lawsuit they face.

However, Michelle Alexander has shown us in her ground breaking book, “The New Jim Crow”, it is virtually impossible to prove racism in the court of law.

This should make an interesting case trying to prove she isn’t 100% correct in her findings.

Should be interesting to see how this case turns out. The way the legal system has been bending these past few months there is no telling if Officer Scott will win is case, but we will be following the story.
