In this day and age, it should be suprising that a school is asking kids in classes to come in dressed as “indians”, yes, racially profiling and culturally appropriating first-nations is being taught to our kids from the get go! We surely have no chance!
BUT parenting can come and beat this mess down and one young African American girl took the teachers words and responded in amazing fashion.
THIS IS POWER!
Tremeka Greenhouse saw her daughter Nyemah’s assignment that asked her to “dress like an Indian,”. Originally she didn’t want her daughte rinvolved. However the 5-year-old was worried the teacher would be mad! SO they hatched a plan together to stay true to the assignment and make an important point.
Greenhouse told the Huffington Post
“I’ve been following the story of the DAPL protestors and thought it would be good for Nyemah to go dressed as a water protestor instead of an actual Indian ‘costume,’”
“I discussed with Nyemah and she loved the idea. Especially after I explained to her the purpose of the protest and we went over the pictures.”
Using a pillowcase vest they created slogans inline with the Daktota Access Pipeline protest and made Nyemah into an activist. Her vest read “Water Is Life” and #NODAPL.
WORD!
Her sister posted this to Twitter:
My sister was supposed to dress like """"an Indian"""" today for kindergarten. This happened instead pic.twitter.com/uZL4US2iJ9

Let’s hope this young girl made the important point to all that saw her.
