Unfortunately, many Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are experiencing financial troubles these days. South Carolina State is one of those institutions, but things have obviously taken a turn for the worse.

South Carolina State has been in a serious financial bind for the last few years and struggling, but the politicians at the State level of government are fed up waiting for a turn around to happen. They took action.

091411-national-top-hbcus-south-carolina-state-universityThe South Carolina House Ways and Means Subcommittee voted to shut down the institution for one year while a Blue Ribbon Committee starts the school over with all new employees. The 3 to 1 vote would close the school on July 1st, 2015. This would eliminate the 2015-2016 school year, then reopen in 2017 with a completely new staff from employees through the Board of Trustees.

What will happen to the students?

The students are being considered. They will be helped in relocating them to other schools in the state if they maintained a 2.5 GPA, which doesn’t seem like a steep requirement for serious students.

South Carolina state has made a few updates on their Facebook page addressing the proposals by the SC House Ways and Means Committee. They are calling for everyone to remain calm, but allow their voices to be heard by posting the numbers and contact information of the state representatives involved.

The University is encouraging all students, alumni, supporters, and parents to remain calm. The proviso is simply a recommendation. The administration and university supporters are fighting to have the bill killed. If you want your opinion to be heard, call your state legislators and governor’s office. Many people believe this will never happen, but is a clear signal something drastic needs to occur in the turn around of this university.

The support of the University, students and community seem to outnumber the movement to close the school, but something needs to happen. Those in place working to get the University back into operational order better hurry.
