If you don’t know what it is you have still probably seen the unique Sankofa bird around.
The symbol of a bird taking an egg off it’s back represents so much for the African diaspora that we feel it really is a symbol to show off with pride, to remind us of our past, to look to the future, to help us understand and focus on the present!
The word Sankofa originates from the Ghanan Twi language. It translates “Go back and get it”. It’s often associated with the proverb, “Se wo were fi na wosankofa a yenkyi,“. The translation of which is “It is not wrong to go back for that which you have forgotten.”
Traditionally Akan art is the most prominent place to find the symbol, usually represented by the bird but also sometimes by a heart.
This symbol and it’s meaning has been taken on by many in the African diaspora to represent “The Need to Reflect on the Past to Build a Successful Future”. Here at Urban Intellectuals that really means a lot to us, it embodies so much about what it means to be African American, the need to stay positive and it embodies our manta of Black Excellence > Ignorance.
So we want to spread this symbol, this message, we want you to teach others, to grow the pride and the strength of such an important message.
We’ve created our own Sankofa design, and we are offering it as a T-shirt, we want our UI Family to wear it proudly and be ready to educate anyone who asks what it is.
So, here is our design, you can get yours here on our store, available in many sizes and colors.
Get your UI Sankofa shirt here, spread the positivity, educate and be proud!
Thank you! MUCH LOVE AND RESPECT.
