I know Patrick Irvine posted this yesterday but my expounding on it became a bit too long so I decided to flesh it out a bit.
Let me throw another angle at you guys. I personally could care less if Donald Sterling is fined or if he pays it. It will not benefit us. Additionally, I hate to see knee jerk reactions to problems that are way bigger than incidents. This was an incident, 2.5 large will do nothing to solve the problem. I, however, am always leery of “mechanisms” that are put in place to “punish” white folks because those same mechanisms then come back to haunt us. When we begin to punish people for private conversations as abhorrent as the subject matter may be, its a quick leap over to fining US for some of the stuff we say in our posts and articles that can be misconstrued as racist and or seditious. Thnk about it y’all, he’s a racist, those who follow basketball have known this for YEARS.
This clown didn’t even try to disguise it. Now he has a private conversation with his whore and she tapes it, which is a crime in most states and jurisdictions in case you didn’t know. You cannot tape someone without letting them know that you are taping them. Not to defend him, just to say I could care less what he says BEHIND CLOSED DOORS. I think he is totally correct in refusing to pay the fine and fighting the sale of his team. As painful to us as it may be, THERE IS NO SUCH CRIME AS AGGRAVATED RACISM. There are various rules, regulations and statutes that guard against discimination but NONE of them apply in this situation. If we allow society to start regulating what we can say or do behind closed doors, some of us are in trouble. Shit I do stuff with my wife that is against the law in some states.
Then there is the issue of HYPOCRISY, some of us hold similar thoughts about homosexuals. Mostly homosexual men as I’ve yet to see an article about the threat to the community from lesbian/bi-sexual women but I discussed that in an article I wrote called The Talk. There have been posts on here that are anti-homosexual at best and downright, “that’s a lttle bit too much” at worst. In fact, I have yet to see anyone speak out against the laws being passed on the continent putting homosexuals in PRISON for life and in some cases giving them the death penalty. Are we good with that? Someone posted an article not long ago about how five companies control what you see on television. This is a classic example of what that really means. I am so tired of US taking whatever sacraficial lamb they throw at us and believing this is somehow making a difference. To be honest, I actually believe that white folks reaction to this story is not so much grounded in his reprehensible attitudes about black folks but instead in his getting caught.
Its like a safety valve, this makes the racist that has true power over the lives of millions of people breathe a little easier. While we’re gnashing our teeth and DEMANDING justice in this case, there’s a judge in Mississippi that is ruling against a black family in a lawsuit against a chemical company, there’s a judge in Texas sentencing a 17 year old boy to 100 years in prison for a non-violent offense, there’s a politician in North Carolina introducing a bill to cut medicaid, SNAP and making you have to recite the entire works of Homer before you can vote, there’s a human resources vice president at a Fortune 500 firm that has subtly influenced his company to not hire black men with any type of felony or who has not worked in the last six months. I could go on, but you get the picture.
The more important thing to remember is that whatever we may think about Sterling, what he said he said in a private conversation. That means a lot. You may not think so but it does.
Drops mic and walks from stage drippin blackness
Do I believe in free speech, yes. Do I believe you have to expect whatever consequences come with you expressing your right to it, absolutely. Nonetheless, I believe in your right to privacy even more.
I was all for Sterling paying whatever price for him speaking in a vile manner about black folks and the players on his team. However, Sterling wasn’t giving a speech at a meeting about his feelings nor was he advising his business associates that they should believe as he does. So, in turn He should fight against his fine, about the league taking his team and any other sanction he.chooses.
The reason why the other owners are dragging their feet about the vote is because they all have to run a mental rolex to make sure they haven’t said something vile and foolish themselves. As Jalal stated, haven’t we said something in our home that wouldn’t be the status quo and are we really willing to give someone the power to crush us with the fly they planted on your wall…
Yay, someone understands me. LOL
