Pharrell’s Roxanne Shante Biopic Will Be Unleashed At Sundance!

Roxanne Shante burst out into the 80s hip hop scene at just 14 years old with her response song to UTFO’s hit Roxanne Roxanne, named Roxanne’s revenge.

Her career lasted two albums before she bailed out if music at just 25 and continued mentoring young female rappers.

A turbulant career that started with a kind of beef and continued with them throughout. Another song by The Real Roxanne dissed her and KRS One once wrote that she was “only good for steady f*cking.”. She was involved in the Bridge Wars between the Juice Crew and KRS-One’s Boogie Down Productions.

Gladly KRS has said he regrets writing that line!

Anyway, her story was certainly interesting an the new bioptic, produced by Pharrell Williams and Forrest Whitaker, will be coming to the next Sundance festival.

The movie stars Nia Long and Chante Adams along with Mahershala Ali.

During an interview, Ali said:

“Usually when you look at hip-hop films and biopics you think, this is a story of this album, or how so and so came up in the business… But it explores why she kind of disappeared and got derailed, to some degree. I believe that’s going to be a film that really grabs people as well, because it’s very nuanced compared to a lot of music biopics.”
