Pastor Jamal Bryant #BlackDollarsMatter: Challenges Black Churches to Create Economic Empowerment

by | Nov 3, 2015 | Business, News | 0 comments

It is obvious many have issues with black pastors, preachers and churches these days.

I can’t fault you for these feelings, but isn’t it about time they stand up and tell their flock to band together economically?

Economic unity is something Urban Intellectuals has been preaching to our readers since inception and it is good to see a member of the black church finally ready to sing this message to their people, but also encourage other black churches to do the same.

Pastor Jamal Bryant is the preacher and pastor of the Empowerment Temple AME Church in Baltimore and is echoing these words loud and proud.

Bryant is on the front lines when it comes to activism in the Baltimore community and on a national level speaking out against police brutality, institutionalized racism and economic inequality in this country.

Now Pastor Bryant is focusing his efforts on the black churches urging them to join the economic empowerment movement in the black community. Asking them to lead their followers in this movement, not spending money on Black Friday to strike a blow to the corporations in this country that control our politicians.

In the video Pastor Bryant says:
“(Last year) I asked everyone to stay away from shopping and spending on Black Friday…Saturday, Sunday and we made a dent of $75 Million dollars was missing from the market because we did not spend.”

He goes on to mention these numbers were verified and written up by the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post and other news outlets, which if you pay attention to the financial markets at all this was pretty obvious. In addition, this is why the markets are nervous about Black Friday turning a profit for businesses this year.

Black people collectively spend $1.3 trillion dollars each year. If we have the intelligence to use our financial power together as a fist, we can strike a blow to the only place American really cares…..

the bottom line of PROFIT!

SOUND OFF: What do you think of Pastor Bryant encouraging black churches to focus on economic empowerment?
