Bill Gates, one of the richest men in the world, is sitting in front of you and personally offers you a job, do you take it? Not Chris Kwekowe. Chris Kwekowe is a 23 year-old dedicated to helping resolve the unemployment issue plaguing his country, which is why he turned down an employment opportunity offered to him by Bill Gates himself. So not only is he an entrepreneur, he’s an entrepreneur dedicated to helping his country!
Kwekowe created Slatecube, a website focusing on solving Nigeria’s unemployment problem. One issues a lot of college graduates can relate to is spending 4 to 7 years earning a degree only to graduate and be told, “you don’t enough work experience.” Nigerian graduates are faced with the same setback and that’s where Slatecube comes in. Slatecube has courses available for a multitude of different career paths, users are required to complete coursework in their chosen discipline and most courses are free. Once the course is completed the user will be offered a digital internships. After the internship is completed employer may decide to hire the Slatecube intern on a full-time bases. This has helped 80% of Slatecube users find employment.
Kwekowe believes, “If you can do business in Lagos, you can do business anywhere in the world. The struggle is real here.” Which is why the success of his program has him planning to expand the company to Ghana, Kenya and South Africa.
