New York Jets Give Contract to Joe Anderson, Who Held a Sign Outside Texans Stadium Hoping to Get a Chance in the NFL

The world loves go-getters! The people who don’t allow their negative circumstances or temporary set backs defeat them. The world gives those people a chance to prove themselves and this narrative fits Joe Anderson.

Six weeks back, Anderson, who is 27 years old, stood outside Houston Texans’ stadium with a sign asking for an NFL job. Something we have seen people looking for regular work do on the subway in New York or even downtown Chicago, but nothing related to the NFL.

According to ESPN, Anderson posted a picture of himself on Instagram holding a piece of cardboard with the words “Not homeless … but STARVING for success,” and the post quickly went viral. He also wrote on the sign in black marker: “Will Run Routes 4 Food” and added the hashtags: #Whateverittakes, #UnderDog, #Hungry and #IBelieve.

His initiative didn’t land him a position on his hometown team the Texans, but it did yield an opportunity with the New York Jets.

Anderson was signed to the practice squad of the New York Jets and began practice with the team on Tuesday. This allowed him to rejoin a former teammate and wide receiver Brandon Marshall as well.

Anderson isn’t a stranger to the NFL, he got a chance to play nine games with the Chicago Bears after he signed as an undrafted free agent in 2012. He got injured in 2013, was with the Eagles in 2014, went to Canada to play and found himself dreaming of getting back into the NFL when he had an idea.

“Lord it’s all in your hands,” he wrote on Instagram last month in his caption to the photo. “All I know is that I believe it by faith and see it all happening even when it looks like a joke before the eyes of man!”

Anderson’s humility gave him a chance, but his skill is what will keep in the NFL for good…if he has what it takes. That remains to be seen, but we know one thing, he has the tenacity, drive and willingness to do what it takes to get the job done as displayed by his unorthodoxed approach to a third chance at the NFL.
