On Sunday, two days before the anniversary of Freddie Gray’s death, a documentary named “Free Young Blood: Combating the Mass Incarceration of Black Males” screened it’s premiere.

The documentary is a self funded, 2nd part of a trilogy, filmed and put together by two young Baltimore filmmakers. The documentary is focused on the mass incarceration of young black men and it’s narrative was steered largely by the protests that broke out after the death of Freddie Gray.

33 year ol Holmesand 31 year old Gladden studied journalism at Morgan State University and they both worked in Baltimore as community journalists before. They pursued their long-form style of storytelling and eventually started the Young Blood documentary series.

The Baltimore Sun wrote:

The duo’s first documentary, “Live Young Blood,” released in 2013, centers around Baltimore’s “epidemic” of violence and community efforts to curb it; Holmes and Gladden feature interviews with mentors, activists, coaches and families affected by gun violence. The duo aims to take a similar solutions-based approach in “Free Young Blood,” which will also examine contributing factors to mass incarceration, such as drug policy and income inequality.

I know I am looking forward to seeing this and backtracking to watch the first!
