R&B singer Miguel is still enjoying his surge in popularity since impressing Kelly Clarkson at the Grammy Awards in February and crashing his body onto a woman at the Billboard Music Awards earlier this month, but now the “Adorn” singer may be turning a few people off.
On his Twitter page on Monday, Miguel, 27, boldly announced that black people are “the most judgmental people in the world.”
“Im proud of my heritage but honestly, black people are the most judgmental people in the world,” he wrote. “S–ts sad man.”
“we’ve been conditioned, pre-programmed to hate ourselves.”
Though the singer is of black and Mexican heritage, his comments were met with a lot of Twitter backlash from the black community.
According to the Urban Daily, Miguel’s string of tweets all started in response to criticism from a Twitter user who accused him of selling his soul.
“Don’t be an idiot,” he initially responded to the person before deleting that tweet. The rant that ensued broadened the conversation to include an entire race of people.
“That’s why I appreciate those who choose to think and act for themselves regardless of ethnicity or culture,” Miguel continued. “The problem can not be fixed until the problem is recognized. Not everyone is the same thank goodness. And obviously, I love all my fans.”
While some fans agreed with his declaration, others concluded his tweets were adorned with irony. Perhaps that’s why the “Sure Thing” singer felt the need to clarify.
“Of course everyone is judgemental,” he added. “I just personally believe we are the most critical of our own.”
