Michael Jordan Not Given Enough Credit for Giving Back in a Major Way

Michael Jordan is currently the CEO and owner of the Charlotte Hornets, making him the ONLY black majority owner in the NBA. Not only are the Hornets the only team with a majority black ownership they also have the most diversified staff in the NBA. The diversity of the Hornets staff emulates the makeup of the staff Jordan helped cultivate at Nike with the Jordan Brand.

Everyone contributes in unique ways and this is Jordan’s contribution. He has helped put African Americans in position they would normally be passed over for. The Jordan Brand is the only one inside of the company to produce multiple African American presidents and executives. And I know what you’re thinking, no this didn’t happen by chance. According to Larry Miller, president of the Jordan Brand, “He has always been focused on creating successful and sustainable businesses and has empowered minority leaders, including myself, with the opportunity to grow and advance those businesses.” Jordan is not a stranger to hiring and promoting minority leaders in his company.

No Jordan didn’t wear his jersey inside out, no he didn’t wear an “I Can’t Breathe” T-shirt but he has taken an economic stand which should not be overlooked. Most major league sports do not have black owners’ only players. The real money is in ownership, the athletes are pawns in this game of chess. So looking at the bigger picture Michael Jordan is giving back in a major way.
