LeBron James has laid out plans to open a public school in his hometown of Akron, Ohio. The school will provide an educational institute for students at risk of falling behind in their schooling.
The school named the “I Promise School” will open for elementary students pretty soon, in the fall of 2018. It’s being supported by the Le Bron James Family Foundation and will start with third and fourth grade, expanding to all grades one to eight by 2022.
The school is aiming to help those “are at-risk in reading and who are in need of additional academic intervention before falling further behind their peers,” according to the LeBron James Family Foundation’s statement.

On Tuesday James spoke about the school whilst at an event in a historic Akron theater saying “Even though I was underprivileged,” that he was lucky to grow up with mentors, his mother and good close friends.
“They would not let me get off course,”
”A lot of the kids I see today in the community and all over the world are not lucky enough to have the same mentors and the same people around that can help their dreams become reality.”
Akron Public Schools Superintendent David James added:
“We definitely understand how important it is to create an environment where our most challenged and at risk students feel safe, supported an cared for,”
The formal proposal will be submitted for school board approval in October.
This is awesome. Shout out to Le Bron.
