The idea of using Bamboo to make bicycles is quite cool. All bicycles are believed to be eco- friendly coupled with other benefits such as exercise. However, it seems there are bikes more eco-friendly than others. Here is a story of Bamboo bikes in Ghana which has taken the news headlines by storm.

Bernice Dapaah, who graduated with a diploma in human resource management, is the founder of Bamboo Bikes Ghana. She has actually redefined the technique of making environment-friendly bicycles a notch higher by using natural bamboo trees. Her motive was inspired by the desire to change people’s lives in her home country by creating employment to over 40 locals among them, the disabled.

Bamboo Bike FounderThe bikes are made from natural bamboo where they are prepared for smoking and heating to prevent them from splitting. There are then tacked by applying high quality adhesives before being wrapped by fibre.

The other parts of the bicycle which include pedals and handles are then made out of conservative materials.

The bikes are purely organic. They have a long lifespan coupled with recyclable and non -polluting properties. Studies have proved that these bicycles reduce carbon emission by 70% thus avoiding hazardous 5kg carbon dioxide emission by steel framed bicycles.

Bernice Dapaah’s efforts have not gone unrecognized by the entire world. Many people have applauded her bold efforts to make something sensational that contributes to the safe upkeep of the environment. The United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who took a ride in one of the bikes, encouraged many countries to adopt what Bernice is doing to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and make the world a better place.

Dapaah is currently the Ambassador for the World Bamboo Organization. She is also an active member of Ghana Bamboo Initiative, which aims to tackle problems associated with climate change, poverty and unemployment in the country.

What Bernice is doing is fantastic. Changing the face of bike transport is a daunting task, but she has made huge progress. The bamboo bikes are currently an export success in Ghana.

Mark you, for every bamboo tree they cut, they plant a hundred more. Is that not great?
