In the midst of the musical poison taking place inside of the hip hop, rap, r&b music, there are a few bright spots. Today, the bright spots get one of their own back. Lauryn Hill, from the Fugees and solo fame, rejoins society and marks the occassion with new music. A song called “Consumerism.”
Lauryn Hill was released from prison today. She served three months for tax evasion. Apparently, she had a lot on her mind during the three month bid in a minimum security prison. Lauryn has new music and is already firing shots at this materialistic state of mind we are infatuated with these days.
Hill — aka Inmate #64600-050 — was released early Friday morning from the minimum security Federal Correction Institution in Danbury, Connecticut.
On her new track, L-Boogie speed-raps through a laundry list of societal ills over a chaotic rhythm that’s more Death Grips than “Killing Me Softly.” Her pointed voice brutally targets “corporate greed in Jesus’ name,” decrying ageism, sexism, racism, fascism, “compromised commercialism,” and “neo-McCarthyism.”
Hopefully, the youth and these so called adults in our community are able to be reached by Lauryn. She has always been a conscious minded celebrity and musician. Her music has always had a message, so we are expecting nothing less moving forward.
Personally, i’m excited. Hip hop, black music, culture is in need of some awakening. Take great music, vibes, charisma and mixing it with a MESSAGE….to move our soul.
Welcome back Lauryn. We are ready, supporting and listening.
