A few of the best comics in the world started in comedy, but transitioned to singing. Who comes to mind immediately is Eddie Murphy and Jamie Foxx. As we know, Eddie wasn’t very successful at making the transition, but Jamie was and is. They both moved into movies like Pryor.

Moving to New York City in 1963, Pryor immediately began performing both in comedy but also in singing, where he opened for Bob Dylan and Nina Simone. Simone recalls of his performance anxiety, “He shook like he had malaria, he was so nervous. I couldn’t bear to watch him shiver, so I put my arms around him there in the dark and rocked him like a baby until he calmed down.

All I can say is after getting over the initial shock of wanting to laugh, Richard Pryor was pretty good. Maybe this was a good night for him or the best of what he has ever done, but if he opened for a few legends, then he obviously had some chops.

Nevertheless, it is impressive to find out he had some singing chops, but i’m glad he move on to comedy because he was/is freaking hilarious!
