Kerry Washington Defends Scandals Showing an Abortion on TV as “Reality”

Renowned producer Shonda Rhimes is known for taking bold decisions when it comes to dealing with controversial issues in her shows. Scandal, a political thriller created by Shonda Rhimes which stars acclaimed actress Kerry Washington who portrays a Washington DC fixer has been rocked by controversy.

This is because of its bold depiction of abortion. Although abortion is a reality being faced by numerous women, it is still a contentious issue that is discussed in hush tones. The bold on-screen depiction of abortion on scandal has received acclaim and criticism in equal measure. Kerry Washington audaciously defended the controversial scene stating that it is up to the media to deal with issues that affect the society.

The talented actress also said that abortion is a difficult choice that many women have to make despite the society sadly condemning such women for choosing to terminate their pregnancies. According to Kerry Washington, bringing the subject of abortion to the forefront of the media will help in reducing the stigma attached to it.

Scandal depicts a strong and financially independent female character, ‘Olivia Pope’ choosing to have an abortion. It shows images of the actual abortion procedure, the difficulty that the character faces when making the decision to abort and the emotional turmoil afterwards.

Kerry Washington further defended the controversial scene by saying that it is the responsibility of the media to use the platform it has to deal with real life experiences that the audience will not only relate to but also learn from.

She went on to say that when delicate and controversial issues such as abortion are openly discussed and showcased in the media, it triggers an open and much needed debate. She also said that apart from increasing racial diversity in television there is also a need to increase the array of experiences represented in television.
