Kendrick Lamar Class at a Georgia University

Hip hop artist, Kendrick Lamar, will be part of the subject matter at Georgia Regents University’s English composition course. The aim is to add diversity to the course while adding some modern classics to the discussion.

Lamar’s album “Good kid, m.A.A.d city”, along with James Joyce, James Baldwin, Gwendolyn Brooks, and the 1991 movie “Boyz N The Hood” are the primary materials to be used in the course. They will explore the literary works of young people growing up in Dublin, New York, Chicago and Compton/Los Angeles.

The freshman composition course is designed to write a research paper about the subject matters involved in all of the artist lyrics, film, and writings. The main subjects involved being gang warfare, police brutality, racism, incarceration rates, human trafficking, etc. It is expected powerful and insightful conversation will be generated as a result.
