Hands up and a big round of respect for this sister circle who made huge history! Known as the Great Eight these African American sisters had a big big celebration this month!
So what on earth did they do?
Demetrees Hutchins, Shannon McCullough, Nadrea Njoku, Juhanna Rogers, Johari Shuck and Jasmine Haywood all have earned their Ph.D in the field of higher education and student affairs. Tiffany Kyser and Jada Phelps Moultrie earned theirs in urban education studies.
That’s right, all 8 graduated at Ph.D level from Indiana University School of Education.
Woah, that’s a rare rare feat!
Robin Hughes, interim executive associate dean, said:
“To graduate eight African-American females from one school is a big doggone deal,”
“And not just for IU, but across the country, that just doesn’t happen.”
“I know they want to change the world, and they should. I expect great things from them. They better bring it.”
That is high praise for special women!
The sisters leant on each other and pushed each other to create this special moment. In a system where it’s African American’s are often seen as lower achievers and discriminated against they are really pushing the mould and showing what can be done.
