The Jamaica Chess Federation was presented with a special donation of JM$2 million by the Sports Minister, Olivia Babsy’ Grange.
This contribution had been done through the country’s Sports Development Fund aiming towards preparation for the coming Chess Olympiad which is set to take place in Baku, Azerbijiani on September 1st to 14th.
Yesterday the Federation received the remaining JM .
25 to complement the JM 0,000 it had received previously.
The minister said that the Federation did very well under President Ian Wilkinson’s leardership.
Since they had challenges not being able to do all they wanted due to limited funds, he had asked for help in order to be qualify for the Olympics. The Minister did not hesitate giving the contribution saying that it was a way of demonstrating the government’s commitment in supporting various sports.
He also encouraged the players by congratulating them on the far they have reached and anticipating on them doing well to make Jamaica proud.
She also added that she was going to see if it is possible on expanding this chess program in the schools and all Jamaican communities.
Since playing chess assisted in analytical thinking, problem solving, and logical thinking, she thought more people should start playing this game.
She also added that she had been having discussions with some countries as a platform for seeking help in building Jamaican chess program.
The delegation is expected to leave Jamaica on 29 August, 2016.
