Let’s face it, Jaden Smith is certainly a character. The eccentric son of superstar Will Smith grew up priviledged and unleashed. This is clear as he flirts with pretty much every boundary he can, when he is not proclaiming grand philosophies (often to hilarious effect) he is playing with style and definitely making his mark.
Often it’s joked that Will and Jada must be shaking their heads but lets face it. They are letting their boy grow up to be the man HE WANTS TO BE.
Recently he was picked controversially to be the face of Louis Vuitton Women’s Wear! Of course the media response was quite large but hey, that’s what the fashion brand wanted. Now everyone is talking about it and Jaden has even more publicity and open space to push the boundaries and his ways. All power to him!
Sadly, his reps have had to deny him being gay, is that even something someone should have to deny or confirm in this day and age? BUT that isn’t that surprising.
For me, the real sadness comes from many in the black community. Jaden is a black man. The 17 year old has been born to two proud black parents, there is no denying who he is.
However due to his behaviour not being in line with what some envision in the community as the correct way a black man should act he has found himself being disowned.
Surely this is a huge problem. You don’t have to like Jaden but to deny his right to be black is just ridiculous.
Claims that people who step out of line are going against the cause are lubricous. All of us must support the right of every man of color to be who the hell they are and also be proud of being any creed, color or religion. The black man is no exception.
Repression cannot be fixed with further repression.
Sure, put your beliefs forward, be who you want to be, teach your children your values but don’t tell another man who or what he can or can’t be.
I support you Jaden.
