Call it politics, looking for media attention or doing the right thing, but the players of Jackie Robinson West Little League baseball team will get rings to commemorate their 2014 title run thanks to current Mayor of Chicago Rahm Emanuel.
JRW had their United States title stripped from them after residency issues arose around a few players of the team who allegedly didn’t live in the teams boundaries. Little League International swooped in to do an investigation and took the championship away from the kids. They were heart broken but unbowed.
Mayor Emanuel spent last week pleading with the ruling body to reverse their decision, but they refused.
Therefore, the mayor decided to do what he could to honor the kids for their hard work, dedication and determination to win the championship by presenting each of them with championship rings.
“Mayor Emanuel believes it is unfair for the organization to have punished the children who did nothing wrong,” said a mayoral source.
“Mayor Emanuel believes it is unfair for the organization to have punished the children who did nothing wrong,” said a mayoral source.
“These young men demonstrated tremendous character both on and off the field, and Chicago will honor them as the champions they are,” Emanuel said.
“The memories they created will last a lifetime, and so will the championship rings they have earned.”
The ring ceremony is to be completed at next month’s City Council hearing. Each and every player on the team will be presented with the ring and hopefully they are able to keep their heads held high during this entire ordeal.
The bottom line is the children did nothing wrong, but when the adults involved are bending the rules, they suffer.
Fortunately, someone still is thinking about the children and they will receive these championship rings to have and forever remember their memorable season.
SOUND OFF: Do you think this is a good idea for Mayor to honor these kids with rings? Or do you feel he is just pandering to the city for addition votes in the upcoming Chicago mayoral election?
