Isis Brantley: Multiple Arrests and Protest For 20 Years For The Right To Braid Hair Naturally, Now She Runs The Only Natural Hair Care School

by | Dec 15, 2015 | Business | 0 comments

One day in 1997 Isis Brantley stood in her Texan salon when two plain clothed officers came between her and her client, five other normally dressed officers stood in the door way.

She was dragged from her salon and arrested by the 7 officers. The crime was braiding hair without a license.

After having her salon shut down she was left homeless with kids but determined to fight for the right to braid natural hair without a cosmetology license.

Isis doesn’t use chemicals, sharp objects or anything particular that can harm a client. She mostly uses her hands to braid.

She took her fight and kept pushing until finally she scored a victory earlier this year. Finally, thanks to Isis, a few eager congress people and other braiders, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott signed into law House Bill 2717, which exempts hair braiders from having to acquire a cosmetology license to operate within the state. This happened in June 2015.

Before that thousands of hours, dollars and irrelevant learning was needed for anyone to braid within a profit business. The license required people to learn to use harsh chemicals, learn to cut hair and do more than most braiders even want to do.

Now finally thanks to Isis and her hard work many African American women have been freed to operate without fear.

Isis cornered her market and now runs the only Texan natural hair care school. You can learn more at NaturallyIsis.com. She has empowered thousands of women and taught them how to braid and run their own businesses, helping bring many from poverty.
