Imagine if black people loved each other the way we love white women: Why I refuse to dog Bill Cosby

I, like everyone else, find it very disappointing that Bill Cosby admitted to giving women drugs in order to have sex with them. I think we all felt some kind of personal connection to Mr Cosby due to the Cosby show and his legacy for encouraging thousands of young black people to enroll in HBCU’s throughout the 90’s.

We all felt as if ‘the Cos’ was interchangeable with Cliff Huxtable. Now this is a disclaimer, in no way am I condoning what Bill Cosby was accused of doing. But as a black woman, I refuse to align myself with the ranks of mainstream white America and publicly lynch a black man when he has not been prosecuted for any of the crimes that he has been accused of to date.

Bill CosbySince Europeans decided to conquer the 7 seas they have shown us devilish tendencies. They have killed, stolen, and destroyed throughout their entire recorded history. Since slavery, Black women have endured being raped by white man and I am yet to see the outrage about it the way that some of Black America is attacking Bill Cosby. If we cared more about black women as much as we care and are defending these white women, we would be better off as a community. Here are a few of the ways that black women are getting raped by white america daily and no one bats an eye.

Criminal Justice system: There are laws that are targeted towards black men. We have allowed lawmakers come into our communities and make these laws that purposely send our brothers, fathers, sons, nephews, uncles, husbands, companions to jail. These unjust and bias laws leaves a lot of black women to have to be the head of their households and their communities.

Employment: Black women are more likely to be unemployed than white women and it’s not because we are not as qualified. In fact, in most cases we are more qualified but because we are black, we are less likely to get hired.

Welfare system: The government came in and convinced us that them giving us “free’ money was better  than having a man in our homes. Especially after the majority of them could not get a job due to glass ceilings, selective hiring and Jim Crow laws which led to over policing within our neighborhoods causing many of our men to have a criminal record (not to mention COINTELPRO and Operation Containment when drugs were pumped into the community to destabilize progressive black movements and the black family). We allowed this system to convince us that our men were useless thus creating a further divide between black men and women.

We jumped on the opportunity to bring this black man down, to help in his public lynching. Ask yourself this, do white people jump at the opportunity to tear one another down? White people commit the same atrocities as blacks if not more but they are not degraded with the same vigor by whites or blacks yet we get hammered in the media and the majority of us refuse to miss the chance to join in. We celebrate President’s Day, Lincoln’s Birthday and even Columbus Day is a paid holiday and we all join in. I wonder who raped more women Bill Cosby or Christopher Columbus?

See here’s the problem with black america, we allow them to teach us their history and to love their ancestors. we allow them to tell us who to hate and who to love, then we begin to view ourselves through their lens. We see one another as inhumane, as animals as thieves and criminals. We don’t want to live around one another. We begin to think we are better than one another, while trying to prove to white people that we aren’t like other black people. Then, we wonder why the black community cannot come together. As long as we continue to be divided and knock one another down (in public) we will forever be divided. No matter what the “wrong” is we should NEVER publicly join in on the lynching of each other’s characters, even when we do not approve of their actions.

I do recognize some black people are pissed at Bill Cosby for the speech he gave at HBCU’s and the NAACP. I for one was never angry at him because we have to realize that there is a portion of black america that he was speaking to. And even if he was out of line, he did not say it in front of white America he said it at black organizations where his audience was majority black. We have an issue with a black man speaking about black issues in front of black people. But we do not have an issue with  Stephen A Smith  saying the same things in front of white America. We will allow white people such as Bill O’Reilly and Rush Limbaugh talk down on us but get mad when a black man do so. We act as if we can’t be criticized by other blacks in front of one another. And if we are to be honest we all know some blacks that fit what Bill Cosby was saying and we all know some blacks that need to make better decisions. That was a conversation that needed to be had.

Black people got on national TV saying that they will pray for Dylann Roof after this man walked in a church and killed 9 black people we forgave him. Bill Cosby admitted to giving white women drugs (and I am sure a lot of people were doing it in those times) he must be killed. Imagine if we loved black people the way we loved white woman. Black women are constantly getting attack by police officers, and i’m always seeing  videos of a pregnant black woman getting man handled by the police. There is little to no outrage and I don’t see white feminist protesting and demanding the police get fired. They are YET to make noise about the mistreatment of black women from police officers. But yet we run and sit in their amen corner with this Bill Cosby thing.

I too have been the victim of sexual abuse. So I do know what it is like. But I will not  hold anyone else  accountable except for the one who violated me. And I refuse to publicly lynch another black man for raping white women, while society unapologetically rapes black women DAILY.
